A magnificent tour across Sùdwest-Fryslân
Overview tour: from the green starting point no. 1 up and untill the red finish point no. 25, the total distance is 114 km.
Starting tour: departure at A6, take road N354 at exit no. 18 (on the road between Lemmer and Joure) and drive towards Woudsend.
At roundabout take road direction Woudsend, drive over the drawbridge, park your car over the bridge and walk back to Café Restaurant De Waterkant at the right directly over the bridge.
At the street terrace directly across the bridge in
Woudsend you have a first class seat for the show of passing yachts, sailing boats and all kinds of pleasure boats and vessels.
From the street café in Woudsend back to the N354 towards
Heeg for a stroll through the village.
The Eel fishermen from Heeg were real
entrepreneurs in the past: they possessed an exclusive landing stage at the
quay of the Thames, near the Tower Bridge in London. Meanwhile their business mentality did not change: on nice sunny days there is just as much
activity here as in Central Amsterdam on a Saturday afternoon. After the 'stretching of one's legs' back in the car towards Blauwhuis.
From Blauwhuis via highway E22 through the city of Bolsward towards Makkum. An alternativ route without highway: along byways via the villages Jonkershuizen, Arkum, Dedgum, Parrega, a few
kilometres via the N359 northwards direction Bolsward and take the left turning via Ferwoude to Makkum. A
stroll through the small city and along the harbour is a must here!
On our way to the next city, you definitely have to visit the very small village of Piaam and drink a nice cup of coffee (or tea) in the beautiful restaurant
De Nynke Pleats
From the village of Piaam to the city of Workum with (again) several inviting street cafés in its town center.
Workum is one of the most beautiful cities of southwest Fryslân, even if only for its beautiful facades, monumental buildings and water-rich surroundings.
The impressive Saint Gertrude Church, the Waag
( Weigh House) and the City Hall are definitely worth a visit. And at a short distance the well known
Jopie Huisman Museum,
here. Workum is popular among water sports enthusiasts because of its great location.
From the 'metropolitan' Workum by way of the N359 and the Oosterdijk towards the small and picturesque fishing city Hindeloopen, where close to the small railway station ( on the Oosterdijk directly to the right
past the railroad ) on the road address 'Lieuwe Klazeslaene nr.3'
an upside down stelp farm is under construction, like an ashore Arch of Noach, a unique event.
Hindeloopen with its
characteristic Lemsteraken and the
painting studio of Johan Mulder located in the small main street 'Buren no. 44' where you are allowed to walk in any time, even
when he is at work.
Step back in time to old Friesland. In this maritime village on the shores of past Zuiderzee, age-honoured traditions still thrive and sailors songs drift on the breeze through narrow lanes and
And along the road just behind the dike of the IJsselmeer towards
Staveren (or Stavoren). The shores of the IJsselmeer are unique.
The circle of towns and villages around the lake enjoy a nostalgic charm. One of these historic gems is the town Stavoren.
The town became very prosperous in the Middle Ages through trade with England,
France and Scandinavia. The medieval legend about the Lady of Stavoren is symbolic for the mysterious decline of the city of Stavoren after a rich and wealthy past.
Nowadays, water sports generate
the main income. Especially during the summer, since Stavoren is one of the main routes from the IJsselmeer to the lakes of Friesland. After Stavoren we continue our route to Bakhuizen and via road N359 up to Balk.
Just before reaching Balk turn to the right and drive along the N359 back to Lemmer. And end of one of my favorite tours.
A magnificent tour in our country from the seat of your convertible.
I am sure, that this tour wil give you an unforgettable day in a beautiful part of the Netherlands !
